Water & You

A mere 2% drop in our body’s water supply can trigger signs of dehydration: fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic maths, and difficulty focusing on smaller print, such as a computer screen. In fact, water makes up the most vital parts of our bodies - the human brain is 75% water, blood is 82%, two thirds of the weight of our whole bodies is water.

Dehydration

Lack of sufficient water (Dehydration) has a number of wide-ranging side effects on the individual including:
  • Tiredness
  • Headache
  • Weakness
  • Dry Skin
  • Irritability
  • Dry Mouth

If you’ve ever experienced any of these symptoms together, it might be surprising to know that a simple glass of water might have been the answer. It is recommended that we drink 8 glasses of water each day - however, many people find it extremely difficult to drink this quantity due to a variety of reasons such as cost and accessibility.

Benefits of Water

Drinking water has a huge number of important benefits - which is why drinking the recommended 8 glasses each day is vital. Some of these benefits include:
  • Weight Loss
  • Healthier Skin
  • Increased Concentration
  • Assists the Body in Absorbing Vitamins & Minerals
  • Increases your Energy
  • Increases your Mental & Physical ability

Studies have also found some alarming results about the importance of water for assisting our body to function - for example research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80 percent of sufferers. Furthermore, drinking five glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can reduce the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

Drinking More Water
  • When you wake - start the day as you mean to go on, with a glass of water.
  • Keep water with you - have a jug, glass or sports bottle of fresh water with you - to keep yourself hydrated throughout your day - even at bedtime.
  • Increase your intake of fresh fruit and vegetables - as well as having other health benefits they also have a high water content that will top up your daily intake.
  • Water is the main ingredient of all drinks - so they actually contribute to your recommended daily fluid intake - but drinking tap water is still the most effective and cheapest way of replacing lost fluids from your body. Filter your tap water to improve the taste.
  • Try and replace some of your typical choice of drinks with a glass of chilled water - start of by replacing one of your drinks once a day and then gradually increase the number of glasses you drink each day - you’ll soon be drinking the recommend 6-8 glasses each day.
